Unrecognizable Characters or Fonts on Print Output After Updating to Windows 8 or Purchasing New PC with Windows 8

What you may see

After initial setup of a USB-connected printer on a Windows 8 Operating System, you observe unrecognizable or illegible characters on your printed output.

Suggested Remedy

Allow Windows Update to update the print driver.

  1. Connect the PC to a network to allow the Operating System to perform a Windows Update.

  2. Wait for for a period of time for the process to complete and then attempt to print again.

  3. If this does not work, see Microsoft Windows Update below for instructions on how to enable this operating system feature.

Explanation

The In-OS or In-box printer driver included with the operating system is not fully compatible with your printer. This issue has been addressed by providing an updated driver that gets disseminated from Microsoft by using the Windows Update feature.

Microsoft Windows Update

This feature manages installation and notification of important updates for the operating system and compatible peripherals; i.e., printer.

Windows Update won't add any apps to your PC without asking for your permission or take away anything you already have.

Enabling Windows Update

To summarize this procedure:

  1. This setting can be changed under Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update.

  2. Alternatively, open the Searchcharm, by swiping in from the right-side edge of the screen.

  3. Enter Windows Update in the search box, perform a search and then select the search result.

  4. In the left pane, tap or click Change settings.

  5. Under Important updates, choose the option that you want from the drop down menu.

  6. Select the only option under Recommended updates to Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates.

  7. Click OK.
