902.86 service engine software error

What you will see

The printer posts a 902.86 Service Engine Software error. The error might occur even when the machine is idle.

Possible cause

This issue might occur if the printer’s engine firmware does not have enough CPU resources, something most likely induced by factors outside the printer (environmental). The following are possible root causes that may result in a 902.86 symptom.

  • Network Configuration / Speed
  • Dirty or unregulated power source
  • Poor behaving solution / server
  • Security Scans directed at the device
  • Bad LVPS
  • Bad cables in wiring closet
  • Bad Network Cable connected device
  • Bad Fax Modem / Phone Line
  • Bad Operator Panel Connection

Suggested remedy

If this is the first time that you have encountered this error, see whether you will be able to clear it by performing a power-on reset (POR).

  1. Power off the printer.

  2. Wait for about ten seconds.

  3. Power the printer back on.

Should the error clear, continue using the printer and observe whether the error returns. Should the error return or if it appears intermittently, isolate the possible cause of the issue by disconnecting:

  • The network cable
  • USB cable
  • Fax line

LEGACY ID: SO7580

  1. Upgrade the printer’s firmware to LR.BS.P691 or the latest. Click here for the firmware update instructions.

  2. Disable the SNMP on the device. NOTE: Do this only if the customer is not dependent on SNMP.

  3. Make sure Quiet Mode is disabled (OFF). NOTE: The printer will print at half speed if Quiet Mode is on. In a limited memory, a 1200dpi printing at half speed will put increased pressure on memory, and thus might result with a 902.86 error.
