CPU Utilization with Lexmark Document Distributor

Overview

Is LDD is a multi-threaded application that can benefit from a CPUs with multiple cores and threads?

Cores, threads and CPU utilization

The answer is not as straight forward as it would seem since LDD utilizes multiple apps and processes. While certain functions take advantage of multiple cores with simultaneous multithreading, others are dependent upon the processes (.exes) utilized by LDD for individual tasks.

For example, CPU-intensive processing for OCR and OMR purposely limit 4 concurrent script instances since these processes are not highly optimized for multi-core and multi-threaded CPUS. Whereas, Apache Tomcat can utilize multiple cores and threads, but its maximum performance is still dependent upon the version of JVM utilized and the Operating System's native capabilities. Another example, is logging, which can negatively impact CPU utilization since concurrency is reduced due to locking the log file.
