Unable to Clear the 'Paper Out' Message on a Lexmark X46x MFP

Overview

This document details how to recover from a paper-out status on the Lexmark X463, X464, and X466 seriesMFPs. These printers do not support a media or paper sensor in the paper tray. For this reason, they cannot detect whether paper is present or missing. Thus, although you load more paper into the paper tray, the device will not automatically feed the paper and continue the print job unless you attend to its intervention message. The process required is detailed below.

What you will see

Normally, when the printer runs out of paper, the Operator Panel (Op-panel) displays the

Status/Supplies

button highlighted in red. Also, a red exclamation mark( ! ) is shown on the Menu button, as illustrated below:

IMPORTANT: Though the printer may print a couple of pages once you restart, it will still go back on the same status as shown above. This gives an impression that the printer is stuck or looping on the same error even after you load its tray with paper. Remember, however, this ‘User intervention’ message is normal because the printer does not have a paper sensor in its tray.

What you need to do

You must follow the procedure detailed below to begin printing again because otherwise the printer will not resume activity.

The Op-panel will display a second window presenting options on how to continue with the print job. You may select:

Paper Loaded, Continue – To resume printing. • Cancel Job – To clear the print job. The Op panel will go back to the home screen. • More information – To show how and where to load the paper.

Note:
You need to perform the Steps 1 to 3 every time you load paper in the printer after it prompts that it has run out. If you already did this and printer still gives you a “Load Paper message”, it may be having issues pulling paper from the tray. In that case, contact Lexmark Technical Support for other troubleshooting suggestions.
