201 or 201.xx Paper Jam Error on a Lexmark T64x Series Printer

ENUS18990

Overview

The 201 and 201.xx Paper Jam error messages indicate a problem with paper jammed between the input sensor at the front and the exit sensor at the back of the printer. When the printer jams, the appropriate error message will display on the printer operator panel. Select Show areas on the operator panel to view one or more images that will help you locate and clear the jam.

Troubleshooting

To resolve the paper jam messages, you must first clear the entire paper path. You can then press the Select button to clear the paper jam message and resume printing. To access the jam area, you will need to open the upper front cover and remove the toner cartridge.

  1. Push the outer release latch and lower the multipurpose feeder.

  2. Push the inner release latch and open the top front cover.

  3. Lift and pull the print cartridge out of the printer.Warning ! Do not touch the photoconductor drum on the underside of the cartridge. Use the cartridge handle whenever you are holding the cartridge.

  4. Place the print cartridge aside. It is recommended to place the cartridge on a sheet of paper so that it can catch any loose toner.
    NOTE:
Do not expose the toner cartridge to direct sunlight. Regular room lighting is fine, but do not leave the cartridge exposed to any light for an extended period of time.

  5. Pull the print media up and toward you. IMPORTANT! Use caution when removing the jammed sheet of paper. The page will likely be covered with unfused toner, which can stain garments and carpeting. The toner will wash off under cool to lukewarm water.

  6. If the print media does not move immediately when you pull, stop pulling. You may need to access the print media by opening the printer rear door. For directions on accessing paper stuck in the back of the printer

  7. Once you have removed all of the jammed paper, align and reinstall the toner cartridge.

  8. Close the top front cover.

  9. Close the multipurpose feeder.

  10. Press the Select (check mark) button to continue printing.

  11. If the printer continues to jam the paper, there are a few more things you can try.

    • If the jamming continues and the paper is getting damaged inside the printer at the front of the fuser unit (the hot rollers near the back of the printer), do the following:
      1. Remove the cartridge and take out the paper that is jammed.

      2. Look for some obstruction in the vicinity of the leading edge of the paper.

      3. Put the cartridge back in and turn the printer off and on.

      4. Watch the rollers at the back of the printer (where the paper comes out onto the top) to see if they are turning during power up. If they are not turning, the fuser assembly is not turning and that is causing the paper to jam as it tries to go through the fuser. The fuser unit will need to be replaced.

    • If the jammed sheet of paper is not damaged when it jams, do the following:
      1. If you are printing on narrow media, the printer may be experiencing a problem reading the correct media size. "201" type paper jam errors when printing on narrow media for more information. NOTE: "Narrow Media" is defined as paper or other print media having a width less than 170 mm (6.7 inches). Due to the jam detection method the printer uses, narrow media can stop feeding through the printer and cause a 201 type paper jam message to appear.

      2. Look to see if the paper has made it into and partially out of the fuser unit. If this is occurring, the exit sensor on the fuser unit may not be working, allowing the paper to get into the fuser but never sensing that it made it to that point. This will probably require a service call on the printer.

      3. You can also check the input sensor flag. To do this:

        1. Power off the printer.

        2. Look for two white rollers and underneath them, two white gears. They are located at the left side of the inside of the printer, under where the cartridge sits.

        3. Just back and to the right of the rear roller and gear, you should see a black plastic flag sticking up through a hole in the black plastic floor of the printer. This is the input sensor flag.

        4. Using a pen or pencil, carefully push the flag towards the back of the printer. It should point to the rear of the printer and lie down.

        5. When you remove the pen or pencil, the flag should pop back up freely.

        6. If it does not, see if you can find out why. There may be a piece of paper or a broken printer part in the way, or the flag may have come loose.

    • Are you printing on regular plain bond copy paper?
      • If not, try printing again with plain copy paper. This will eliminate special media as part of the cause of the jamming, even if the special media has worked in the past.
        NOTE:
Certain specialty papers, letterhead stock, label stock, and card stock can promote jamming in the printer. For more information on this, please refer to the Card Stock and Label Guide. By carefully selecting print media and loading it properly, you should be able to avoid most paper jams.

If you go through all of the above checks and the printer continues to jam or if you cannot find any paper jammed in the printer, the printer may require service. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local service provider. Important! If your 201 Paper Jam error message ends in .3x, .4x, or.5x, the fuser unit has exceeded its expected life. You will need to have the maintenance kit replaced. For more information, please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized servicer in your area.
