Unable to Send Additional Print Jobs via Print and Hold

Overview

When using any of the following Print and Hold features, you cannot send any further jobs after a job has been sent and held by the printer. Moreover, the subsequent jobs remains stuck in the computer’s spooler and are not sent to the printer.

  • Confidential
  • Verify
  • Reserve
  • Repeat

NOTE:
This happens when using a custom port monitor.

Affected products

See printers found on the Universal Print Driver page that support PS emulation.

Recommended solution

For all Print and Hold features, the port monitor should no longer check for true end-of-job PJL commands. You may perform either of the following:

  • Discard the custom port monitor and use Microsoft standard port monitor (TCP or USB).
  • Contact the vendor who has written the port monitor and ask them to modify the code logic. The vendor may refer to the following recommended PJL commands per feature.

Print and Hold FeaturePJL Command
Confidential@PJL SET HOLD=ON @PJL SET HOLDTYPE=PRIVATE @PJL SET HOLDKEY="<PIN>"
Verify@PJL SET HOLD=PROOF @PJL SET HOLDTYPE=PUBLIC
Reserve@PJL SET HOLD=STORE @PJL SET HOLDTYPE=PUBLIC
Repeat@PJL SET HOLD=ON @PJL SET HOLDTYPE=PUBLIC

Explanation

Some custom port monitors wait for a true end-of-job notification from the printer. After every print job, such port monitors expect a Printer Job Language (PJL) command from the printer to register the job that was sent as having been printed successfully before it sends the next job to the printer. While for Print and Hold, the port monitor treats the job as not printed and does not send any further jobs until you release the job from the printer’s control panel.
