How to Adjust 'Memory Use' Settings to Prevent Memory Shortages on Lexmark MFPs

Overview

This article provides a brief description on the how to adjust the fax memory use settings to maximize performance.

Also consider this procedure if the following symptoms are observed when sending or receiving a fax:

  • 818 fax errors displayed on transmission log. This can occur with Fax Send jobs and indicates insufficient memory on device to store scanned image.
  • 819 fax errors displayed on the fax call log. This can occur with Fax Receive jobs and indicates indicating insufficient memory to store received image.
  • 38 Memory full displayed on the LCD; however, this message is often remedied by adding more memory to the printer.

Memory Use

This fax setting corresponds to the amount of memory on the MFP allocated for send and receive fax storage functions.

How to change "Memory Use" allocations

Method 1: Control panel

This method is preferred if the device is not on the network.

  1. Click on the MENU button.

  2. Click the down-arrow and click on SETTINGS when visible.

  3. Click on the FAX SETTINGS.

  4. Select ANALOG FAX SETUP.

  5. Click on GENERAL FAX SETTINGS.

  6. Click on the down-arrow until MEMORY USE is visible.

  7. Click on the right or left menu buttons to adjust the MEMORY USE setting to improve or alleviate the performance issue.

  8. Click on SUBMIT.


NOTE:
Turning ON this feature may also prevent successful fax transmission. Change this setting only when necessary.

Method 2: Embedded web server

This method is preferred if the device is on the network and you are not near the machine.

  1. Obtain the printer's TCP/IP address.

  2. Open your web browser.

  3. In the URL field, type http:// <MFP's IP_ADDRESS>, where IP_ADDRESS is the TCP/IP address of the printer.

  4. Click on SETTINGS.

  5. Click on FAX SETTINGS.

  6. Click on ANALOG FAX SETUP.

  7. Locate MEMORY USE at the top of the page under FAX SETTINGS.

  8. Click the down-arrow and select a different MEMORY USE setting as necessary.

  9. Click on SUBMIT.

Error suggestions and available Memory Use settings

If you are seeing several 818 errors, change the Memory Use setting to the Mostly Send.

If you are seeing several 819 errors, change the Memory Use setting to Mostly Receive.

EqualSplits the memory for sending and receiving fax jobs into equal amounts.
Mostly sentMost of the memory is set to send fax jobs.
