843.xx or a 844.xx error

Issue description

The printer displays a 'Scanner Failure' message. The message is also accompanied by an 843.xx or an 844.xx type numeric error code (where 'x' can be any number); i.e., 843.02, 843.14, 844.00, 844.43, etc.

Solution

Powering the printer off and back on may clear the error.

If this is the first time that you have observed this error, see if the error can be cleared simply by powering the printer off, and then back on.

  1. Power off the printer.

  2. Leave the printer powered off for 10 to 20 seconds.

  3. Power on the printer again.

  4. Open the flatbed scanner cover and watch the scanner bar (head) in the flatbed scanner. Confirm that it follows the correct startup sequence detailed below.

    • The scanner bar should light up.
    • After that, the scanner bar should move left, then right, multiple times before stopping under the gray strip located on the left, between the ADF window and the flatbed window.
  5. Watch the operator panel to determine if it prompting 'Ready'. If it does, close the scanner cover and try using the scanner unit again. If the scanner works, continue to use the printer as normal. Observe the printer closely over the next few days to see if the error message returns

If the error message returns when you power the printer back on, or if the error returns a short time later, a service call will be required to correct the issue. Contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional information.

Note:  While waiting for a service action to be arranged, you can choose to disable the scanner unit and use the machine to print jobs from the computer. To do this, perform the appropriate directions in the following steps.

For X26x and X36x printer models

('x' can be any number)

  1. Power off the printer.

  2. With the printer still powered off, press and hold the back button and the right arrow button.

  3. Power the printer back on while keeping these buttons held down. Release the buttons when a series of dots ('.....') appears on the printer screen.

  4. If done correctly, the printer will display a 840.01 Scanner Disabled message. When this message appears, press Continue to clear the error and continue using the printer.

To re-enable the scanner unit, simply power the printer off then back on. Do not hold down any buttons this time.

Note:  This also means that if the printer is turned off for any reason, you will need to go through the steps above when powering it on if you wish to keep the scanner unit disabled.

For X46x printer models

  1. Power off the printer.

  2. With the printer still powered off, press and hold the 2 and 6 buttons on the numeric keypad.

  3. Power the printer back on while keeping these buttons held down. Release the buttons after 10 seconds or when the printer displays a list of menu choices. If done correctly, the configuration (or Config) menu will be displayed.

  4. Navigate through the list of menu options and locate Disable Scanner. Select this setting.

  5. Disable the scanner and save the change. The printer should return to the main menu.

  6. Navigate through the list of choices until you see Exit Config or Exit Config Menu as a choice.

  7. Select this and the printer will restart, and then return to the 'ready' screen.

Note:  To re-enable the scanner unit, simply follow the steps above. On step 5, choose to Enable the scanner unit.
