'919' Type Errors (919.00, 919.01, 919.02, etc.) Appearing on a Lexmark W840 or X85x Series Printer

ENUS27516

What you will see

The printer is displaying a 919 error (919.00, 919.01, or 919.02). The error indicates a failure within the exit 2 bin unit. See below for details. NOTE: The images in this document show the W840 model. However, the instructions also apply to the X85x multifunction printers.

What to do

  • Should you install a Finisher option (pointed to as Unit-A in the image below), the printer might display a 919 error message if the duplex option parts, which consists of the Exit Bin 2 (Unit B) and Duplex Unit (C), are not properly installed onto the printer.

  • Try reseating the exit 2 bin unit. The exit 2 unit may be loose or not locked in.

StepActionImage
1Power off the printer. Lower the left side multipurpose feeder tray.
2Open the left-side door by lifting up on the release latch labeled with an "A" on it and lower the door.
3Remove the Exit bin 2 unit located on the top left area of the printer. (Refer to the right-hand image and also the green-colored area in the first image above for reference.)CAUTION! Exercise care as some force may be needed to disconnect the plug on the left side.
4 With the Exit bin 2 unit removed, check the area and the unit for any obstructions (paper or another foreign object) or damage. Remove any obstructions you find.No image
5 Reattach the Exit bin 2 unit. Make sure the unit latches into place. Note: If you have problems getting the exit assembly piece installed, check that the plug on the exit piece is lined up with the plug on the printer and that nothing is obstructing either plug. Click here for a picture showing the two plugs.
6Once the the Exit bin 2 unit is secured into place, close door A.
7Power on the printer and try printing again. No Image

  • If the error continues, check the duplex cable located at the rear of the printer and make sure it is plugged in fully.

StepActionImage
1 Power off the printer. Go around to the back of the printer. Remove the lower rear access panel. Press the panel down to unsnap it.
2You will see a set of connectors. Find the connection labeled Duplex. Make sure the duplex cable is plugged in all the way.
3Reinstall the rear access panel. Press the panel upwards and make sure it snaps securely back into place.
Note:
If you have problems getting the rear access cover back onto the printer, make sure the duplex cable is feeding through the small hole on the right-hand side of the access cover.
4If the cable was loose and you reconnected it, power on the printer and try printing. No Image

  • If the duplex cable is plugged in, try reseating the duplex unit on the left side of the printer.

StepActionImage
1Power off the printer. Open the duplex access cover, labeled D.
2There are two circular latches at the top of the duplex unit holding it into place (click here for a picture). Turn each of these latches 90 degrees in the counter-clockwise direction. CAUTION! This may require some force, so be careful not to break the knobs.
3 Close door D. Remove the duplex unit from the left side of the printer. Lift up on the duplex option when removing it. There are two tabs at the bottom of the duplex option that attach the bottom of the duplex to the printer. Click here for a picture highlighting the tabs.CAUTION! The duplex cable is still attached to the left side of the duplex unit.
4 While the duplex unit is away from the printer, check the area for any obstructions (paper or another foreign object) or damage. Remove any obstructions you find.No image
5Reattach the duplex unit to the printer. Line up the tabs at the bottom of the duplex option and attach the bottom of the duplex to the printer. Click here for a picture highlighting the tabs.
6 Open door D. Turn each of two circular latches at the top of the duplex unit (click here for picture) 90 degrees in the clockwise direction. You should hear the latches click into place when they are in the proper position. When finished, confirm that the top part of the duplex unit is now secured to the door.CAUTION! This may require some force. If you are having problems getting the latches to turn, make sure the top of the duplex is flush against the printer.
7Close door D. Make sure the door is fully closed.
8Power on the printer and try printing again. No Image

  • If the error continues after all of the above have been checked, a sensor on the exit 2 bin unit may need to be replaced. Contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized service center. See Additional Assistance below for more information.
  • Temporary fix (ONLY if a finisher unit is not installed)

If a finisher unit is NOT installed on the printer, you can try removing the duplex unit and exit 2 unit and running the printer without them. If that clears up the error, you can continue running the main printer until those two parts have been serviced or replaced.
