Recommended Actions

Before performing troubleshooting steps with the scanner, try printing a Network Setup Page to help determine which hardware part causes the issue. To do this:

• At the Ready screen, press the Menus button located in the lower right-hand corner. • A list of menu choices will display. Using the Navigation keys, please select Reports. Another list of menus will then appear in the operator panel. Select Network Setup Page. • The printer will print out one to three pages, depending on how many network options it has installed. Each of these pages has a border on them that will help you to see if they exhibit the same missing or cut-off issue.

If the borders on the Left-Hand Edge of the Network Setup pages appears missing or cut-off, then an issue exists with a part on the base printer. For further suggestions on how to correct the issue, please contact a local authorized service center or Lexmark Technical Support for other troubleshooting suggestions.

If all four borders on the Network Setup pages are parallel with the edges of the page, one of the scanner units may require a service action to correct the issue. In order to determine which of the scanner units require a service action please try the following steps below.

Troubleshooting

StepsActions
1

Try to scan the Network Setup Page in the flatbed scanner. When using it, make sure you properly align the page with the upper-left corner of the scanner glass and fully against the edges. Did the print defect return?

Yes: The printer requires a service action in order to correct this issue. Please contact a local authorized service center or Lexmark Technical Support for assistance No: Continue to Step 2.

2

Try to scan the Network Setup Page again in the ADF input tray.
NOTE:
Do not load different sizes or types of paper at the same time in the ADF input tray. Did the print defect return?

Yes: The printer requires a service action in order to correct this issue. Please contact a local authorized service center or Lexmark Technical Support for assistance No: Try printing the Network Setup Page again. If the document prints correctly, the print defect issue may have been an isolated incident. However, observe the printer closely over the next two weeks to see if the issue returns.

What you will see

If the left side of the page is getting shifted and cut-off when scanning from the ADF, the most likely cause of the problem is with the ADF Input Tray of the Lexmark 4600 Scanner option connected to a Lexmark T64x or a Lexmark C78x Series Printer. The original is not centered correctly on the tray due to the Edge Guides being out of sync. Therefore, one edge of the original is not getting scanned.

Things to try with customer over phone:

Ensure customer is loading the original correctly and adjusting the Edge Guides on the ADF Input Tray so they are flush with the paper. The paper guides should be adjusted to set firmly against both long-side edges of the paper. However, they should not be fitted so tightly against the paper that they buckle the sheets.
NOTE:
Paper guides come loose due to normal usage and therefore they should be adjusted with every scan. If the problem requires a service call try/replace the things below:

Parts to send on first service call: The part numbers listed here are correct as of June 2010. Please confirm that they are still current and valid before ordering.

Part number: 40X2532 – ADF Document input tray

IMPORTANT! This part number applies only to the Lexmark 4600 scanner and bundle packages where the scanner and printer are separate pieces (X646ef and X782e). This information/part number do not apply when the printer and the scanner are built into one complete unit, as with the other X646e models. If you have any questions on this, please contact your next level of support or Lexmark Technical Support.

Important Reminder! Things to have servicer inspect while on-site:

Verify the Edge Guides on the ADF Input Tray are correctly timed.

4Remove the five screws from the bottom of the ADF Input Tray and remove bottom cover.
