Printer is emitting a repeating series of five beeps and the control panel is not working

Issue description

When you power on the printer, the operator panel is blank or displays only rows of diamonds. In addition, the printer is emitting a repeating series of five beeps.

The printer has detected a problem with the operator panel assembly. The cause could be a loose cable or a malfunctioning operator panel assembly or other internal card.

Solution

  1. Power off the printer, then unplug the power cord.

  2. Access the main system board.

Note:  This task requires a #2 Phillips screwdriver. For detailed directions and images, please refer to the User's Guide.

    1. Open the system board door.

    2. Loosen the screw on the system board cover.

    3. Remove the system board cover.

  3. Look at the large system board and locate the cable in the image below. This is the cable that connects to t he operator panel. If this cable is loose, it will prevent the operator panel from powering on, thus causing the printer to emit a series of five beeps. Even if the cable appears connected, push on it lightly to confirm it is plugged in completely.

Warning—Potential Damage:  System board electronic components are easily damaged by static electricity. Touch something metal on the printer before touching the system board or the cable. To view an illustration, click here.

  4. If the issue continues, power off the printer again. check the following.

    • Confirm that the printer is connected to a known good power source. If the printer is connected through a surge device or power strip, try connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet.
    • If any optional cards are installed (such as a memory card, network card, or font card), access the system board again and remove them. Power the printer back on without these options installed. If the printer returns to the Ready state after the option cards are removed, try printing again. If the printer functions correctly, power it off and try reinstalling the option card(s) to see if one was simply loose or installed backwards. If the diamonds return after an option card is reinstalled, that card will need to be replaced.
  5. If the issue continues after you have carried out all of the above checks, the printer will likely require service to correct the issue. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized service provider for additional assistance.
