24x.17 paper jam error

Explanation of the error message

A 24x.17Paper Jam message (where x can be any number) indicates that one or more paper trays located above the source tray has been removed. The error message will indicate the source tray. For example, a 242.17 Paper Jam - Check Tray 2 message indicates that the printer was feeding from tray 2 at the time and thinks either tray 1 or the duplex tray (if installed) is not fully inserted into the printer.

Recommended actions

  1. Please ensure that all of the paper trays, as well as the duplex tray (if installed), are fully inserted into the printer.

  2. If all paper trays appear to be fully installed, open each paper tray in turn and examine the area for a sheet of paper or other obstruction stuck somewhe re in the printer. NOTE: Paper jams in these areas can occur on the inside of a tray or across more than one paper tray. If you select Show areas on the operator panel, you can view one or more images to help you locate and clear the jam. You can also follow the directions in the table below.

NOTE: The images in the table below use tray 2 as an example, but the directions apply to all trays.

1

Start with the paper tray indicated in the error message. Open the tray and remove any partially fed media from the tray.

NOTE: If the tray indicated in the paper jam error is an optional 2000-sheet feeder (see lower image), open the front door. Press the elevator button (A) to lower the tray. Remove any partially fed media from the feeder. Also make sure the stack of print media is straight and pushed all of the way into the feeder. Incorrectly loaded paper is the most common cause of paper jams from a 2000-sheet feeder option.

2

Open all paper trays above the source tray. Remove any jammed paper or other obstructions you find.

3

If a duplex option is installed, remove the duplex tray and look for any jammed media in this area as well.

4

Once you have checked all of the trays, make sure they are all fully installed in the printer. Press the

button to clear the paper jam message and resume printing. If the paper jam message continues to display, the printer is detecting another page jammed somewhere in the printer. The error code will indicate the location. For a diagram showing the error code locations, click here.

NOTE: The paper path will vary, depending on the paper source and number of paper feed options installed.

If the Printer Continues to Jam Paper

  • Power off the printer. Inspect the entire paper path of the printer for any jammed sheets of paper or other obstructions. Remove any obstructions you find and try printing again. NOTE: If any part of the printer appears to be damaged, the printer may require service. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local service provider. See the ' Additional Assistance' section at the end of this document for information.
  • To narrow down the source of the issue, try printing a 20-page print job from each tray, beginning with tray 1 (the top tray). When you see this paper jam message again, the drawer directly above the tray you are printing from is the source of the problem. For example, printing from trays 1 and 2 works as expected but you receive a 243.17 error when printing from tray 3. In this case, tray 2 is the source of the problem and will require service.
  • If you have tried all of these suggestions and the paper jams continue, the printer may require service. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local service provider. See the 'Additional Assistance' section below.

Additional Assistance

If none of the above suggestions resolves the issue, please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized service provider for additional assistance.

If you call Lexmark Technical Support for assistance with your printer, please be prepared to describe the problem you are experiencing and any troubleshooting steps you have already taken. This information can be found on a label located on the inside of the printer, under the front cover. Please call from near the printer in case the technician asks you to perform a task involving the printer.

To narrow down the source of the issue, try printing a 20-page print job from each tray, beginning with tray 1 (the top tray). When you see the 24x.17 paper jam message again, the drawer above the tray you are printing from is the source of the problem. For example, printing from trays 1 and 2 works as expected but a 243.17 error displays when you print from tray 3. In this case, tray 2 is the source of the problem and will require service. If the problem is coming from the base printer (tray 1), replace the tray 1 paper size sensing board. If the problem is coming from one of the optional trays, either swap out the option or replace the following parts on the option:

  • - Right side bellcrank (also referred to as the tray bias bellcrank)
  • - Right side bellcrank spring
  • - Option tray board (also referred to as the option system board)
