Overview
This message is caused by a defective/damaged smart chip on the toner cartridge and may display when you power on the printer. The error will also state not to power off the machine as the message will eventually clear. Since the issue is related to the toner, the error may appear even when the printer is not connected to any computer or in the network.
Troubleshooting
Steps | Actions |
1 | Power off the printer and allow it to sit powered off for 30 seconds to one minute. |
2 | After 30 seconds or more, power on the printer and listen to it for one minute. See whether the printer comes to the 'Ready' state after powering it back on; use its operator panel to print one of the internal pages, such as a settings page or a demo page. Note: If the issue occurs again, proceed with the steps below.

3 | If the customer has a printer of the same model, try swapping the toner cartridges. Otherwise, replace the toner cartridge with another one of the same part number. Note: If the error appeared right after replacing a particular cartridge, remove it and reinstall the old cartridge. See if the error message clears. This will help in determining which cartridge is defective.

4 | Power off the machine again and remove the network connection. Power on the printer and wait without doing anything. (Please allow plenty of time for the printer – possibly up to two hours, without doing anything). |
5 | If message does not go away, try replacing all cartridges. |
