Overview
A requirement for the creation of a valid Scan to Network destination is the entry of a valid UNC path to the shared folder.
Note: If the share resides outside of the local domain, the server name will need to be specified using a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN).
How to find the FQDN
The FQDN for a computer is made up of two parts:
- The host name of the computer
- The domain suffix
To find these values on a Microsoft Windows XP machine:

Write down the Full Computer Name and Domain.
So, in Microsoft™ Windows, the Fully Qualified Domain Name(FQDN) comprises the hosting server's Full computer name + Domain.
For example, “MyComputer” and “ desk.office.house.com” yields “MyComputer.desk.office.house.com".
A UNC example with the FQDN
Full computer name | Domain | FQDN | Destination "UNC" addresswith "myshare" as the sharename |
---|
MyComputer | desk.office.house.com | MyComputer.desk.office.house.com | \\MyComputer.desk.office.house.com\myshare |
UNC
When attempting to connect to a shared Windows folder using the Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol, Lexmark solutions such as Scan to Network and Fax Forward require a valid computer name and share name to be provided using the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) format.
In this format, the server name and share name use the syntax: \\servername\sharename.
Other Acceptable UNC path entries.
UNC Requirement | Allowed Server names | Use Suggestion |
---|
\\servername\sharename* | \\hostname (Computer name) | If the share resides within the same local domain as the MFP, \\hostname\sharename should be all that is required. |
\\Fully Qualified Domain Name | If the share resides outside of the local domain, the server name will need to be specified using a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN). |
\\IP address | How to Configure and Test Scan to Network with a TCP/IP Address Instead of the DNS Host Name for more information. |
\\server name or IP address without sharename. | Certain LDAP configurations only ,e.g., homeDirectory configuration. |
*The name of the shared directory or folder name.
Note: You will have the option to add a directory folder at runtime if configured to allow users to create directories.
