Overview:

This article provides the steps for performing a communication test for MS SQL server database using a data link (UDL file).

The ability to test the connectivity to an SQL Server can be very useful when troubleshooting issues.

How to test connectivity:

Follow these steps in testing communication to a MS SQL Server Database using a Data Link (UDL File).

  1. Open Notepad.exe to create a new file (no need to put any content to it).

  2. Save the file using any filename you want, then add a ".udl" extension (e.g., SQLTest.udl) and select "All files" as the file type in saving the file.
    NOTE:
Save the file to any location you can readily access.

  3. Open the file you have created by double clicking its icon from where you have saved it.

  4. In the pop-up window, click the Driver tab and make sure to select "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server".

  5. Go to the Connection tab and type the SQL Server Name. An instance name depending on your setup might be required.

  6. Provide the credentials then click the "Test Connection" button.
