Unable to install solutions via the embedded web server

Issue description

When installing a .fls file through the embedded web server (EWS) > Settings > Embedded Solutions > Install, you may encounter either of the following messages:

  • An error occurred while uploading a file.
  • Click here to see image.
  • The size of the uploaded file exceeds the maximum allowed. One example of this scenario has been seen when trying to install Scan to Sharepoint 2.5.0 via the printer's EWS.

Note:  Refer to the steps below to access the printer’s EWS.

Affected printers

This issue has been seen on the following Lexmark models, but other models not listed here could be affected:

  • X46x
  • X65x
  • X73x
  • X86x
  • Note:  An x denotes any number within a given printer model series.

Solution

Before you begin, make sure that the printer has enough storage and/or memory to install a new app. You may check for the available space on the device by going to EWS > Settings > Embedded Solutions > System tab > Info, and then refer to Storage Free space in the Resource section. Refer to KB article FA1023 for more details on resource values.

Option 1: Install via Update Firmware section on EWS.

To resolve this issue, install the app using either of the following routes:

  1. Download the solution or file to a local workstation or computer.

  2. Extract the solution file (.fls) into a file directory on the computer that is well known or to a directory or folder.

  3. Go to EWS>Settings>Update Firmware> click on Choose File button to select the .fls file, and then click Submit.

Option 2: Install via File Transfer Protocol (FTP). To do this:

  1. Download the solution or file to a local workstation or computer.

  2. Extract the solution file (.fls) into a file directory on the computer that is well known or to a directory or folder that will be easy to switch to from a command prompt.

  3. Open a command prompt on your computer by using either of the following methods:

    • Click Start > Run > type cmd > OK, or
    • Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run
  4. To simplify this procedure, it is recommended that you change drive letters and directories to the exact location of the file using any combination of "drive letter :" or "cd" commands.

  5. Type "ftp<MFP's_IP_Address>", where MFP_IP_Address is the TCP/IP address of the printer.

  6. Type bin, and then press Enter to put the session into binary mode.

  7. Type "put"<filename>, where filename is the full .fls filename.

  8. Press Enter.

Note:  If you skipped Step 4, then you will need to include the full path to the file name, for example put C:\solutions\scanToSharepoint2.5.0.fls.

Explanation

Certain files exceed file-size limits for flash methods using the device's EWS.
