The Multifunction Printer (MFP) Shows a Blue Screen During the Scanning Process

Affected Products:

Multifunction:

MX710, MX711, MX717, MX718, XM5163, XM5170

Issue Description:

The printer’s control panel shows a blue screen when scanning a document using the automatic document feeder (ADF).

Possible Cause

The issue could be related to an 843.15 Scanner error wherein an ADF motor stalls due to improper stacking of documents in the ADF. The images below show documents that are improperly stacked in the ADF.

  • Paper in the middle has been crumpled up and mixed with the rest of the documents to be scanned.

  • Document stack sheets to be scanned are not properly aligned when being fed into the ADF.

Solution:

The following tips should help prevent the issue from occurring when scanning through the ADF:

  • Make sure the paper stack's edges are even when loading its sheets into the ADF input tray.

  • Confirm that the paper support guides are set in the correct position. The support guides should lightly rest against the paper stack, thereby preventing the stack from shifting left to right while not binding the paper.

  • Do not load different paper sizes or types at the same time.

  • Make certain not to overload the ADF input tray.

If the control panel is already on bluescreen, try to restart the printer and see whether it will resume the Ready state.
