980 or a 980.02 Service Finisher Error

Issue description

The printer displays a 980.02 Service Finisher Comm error when printing or when powering on. Powering the printer off and on may clear the error for a short time.

Possible causes

The printer is experiencing problems establishing communication with the finisher option. The following issues can cause this communication failure:

  • The communication cable that connects the finisher to the printer is loose or disconnected.
  • The power cord connecting the finisher to the printer is loose or disconnected.
  • One of the finisher cables is damaged and will need to be replaced. This will require a service action.
  • An electronic board on the printer or the finisher option is damaged or has failed. This will require a service action.

Solution

Check the finisher connections and cables

Step

Action

1

Power off the printer.

2

Look at the back of the printer and the finisher option. Confirm that both the communication cable and the power cord from the finisher option are plugged into the back of the printer (picture).

If one or both of these cables are unplugged, plug the cable(s) back in. Power on the printer and see if this corrects the issue.

3

If both cables are connected, unplug them from the printer. Inspect both cables and the two connectors on the printer for any damage. If the cables and the connection plugs on the printer appear undamaged, reconnect the cables and continue with step 4 below. Make sure to fully plug in the cables.

If either of the cables or if one of the connections on the printer appears to be damaged, a service action will be required to correct the issue. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support or an authorized service provider for assistance.

Note: You can choose to disconnect the finisher option and use only the base printer until you can arrange service. Removing the finisher option entirely from the printer should clear the error message.

4

Confirm that the finisher option is pushed completely against the printer. The finisher option should be firmly locked into position with the printer.

5

Power on the printer. If the finisher error does not return, try printing to the finisher option. If the finisher operates correctly, continue using the printer and finisher option as normal. Pay close attention to the printer over the next few days to see if the error returns.

If the Service Finisher error returns on restarting the printer or shortly after printing, a service action may be required to correct the issue. Please contact Lexmark Technical Support or an authorized service provider for assistance.
