Setup Required or Remove Internal Packaging message

Issue description

A 'Setup Required' or 'Remove Internal Packaging' error message appearing on the printer operator panel indicates that some of its supplies (i.e., toner cartridges, photoconductor units, etc.) packing material that was shipped with the printer had remained inside the printer when the unit was first powered on. You will need to remove the protective packing material from these supplies before first using the printer.

Note:  This message is completely normal. It appears on the printer display when a printer is turned on for the first time.

Solution

Note:  If you do not feel comfortable performing the steps below, please contact Lexmark Customer support for further assistance.

StepsActions

1

Power off the printer.

2

Open the printer and verify whether any internal packaging materials were left inside during setup. Remove any that you find.

Note:  Please download the Setup Sheet (C74x / X74x) for further instructions.

3

Power the printer on. Did the error message return?

  • Yes: Continue to Step 4.
  • No: The error is resolved.

4

If the error did not clear, first set the printer to Invalid Engine Code status. To do this:

  1. Power off the printer.

  2. Press and hold the buttons: 3+4+6 (E+N+G).

  3. Power on the printer and release the buttons after ten seconds.

  4. Once restarted, the printer should post 'Invalid Engine Code'.

5

Download this special firmware code just to allow the printer to bypass the "Setup Required" state and power up to an error which will allow the printer to diagnose the issue.

6

After downloading the firmware, proceed with any of the methods below to perform the update.

Note:  Updating the firmware should resolve this type of error code. If the error persists or should you have difficulties updating the printer's firmware, please contact Lexmark Technical Support.

7

After the update the printer will then boot up to an error code indicating what sensor or supply is causing the issue. To arrange service on the printer, please contact Lexmark Technical Support or a local authorized service provider.
