900.40 error when printing IPDS

What you may see

A 900.40 crash code when printing IPDS from a mainframe AS400(I-Series) with the Lexmark X792 and C792 printer. This error may also be witnessed printing from other IPDS sources.

NOTE:Other printer data streams are not affected by this issue.

Fix

Download and update firmware as necessary. Determine current firmware levels, download the firmware fix, and select the best code-flashing procedure for your environment.

  1. Return the printer to Ready.

  2. Identify the Base and IPDS firmware code levels. Obtain the Menu Settings page or access the printer's embedded web server (EWS) for this purpose.

    To do this from the printer's operator panel:

    Press the Menu button on the Operator Panel.

    Touch Reports.

    Touch Menu Settings Page to start printing.

    Look for the code level under “Device Information”.

    To do this from the printer's embedded web server(EWS):

    Launch your internet browser application.

    After http://, enter the printer's IP address.

    Click on Reports.

    Click on Device Information.

  3. Determine if the printer requires a firmware update.

    If Base and IPDS levels lower than....

    Then...

    Lexmark X792

    Update firmware.

    Go to http://support.lexmark.com/printerfirmware.

    Enter the keycode x792ipds.

    LHS.HC.P131a_IPDS530

    Lexmark C792

    Update firmware.

    Go to http://support.lexmark.com/printerfirmware.

    Enter the keycode c792ipds.

  4. Utilize one of the following methods to flash or send the firmware to the printer.

    Firmware Flash Methods

    Information

    Embedded Web Server (EWS) Recommended

    Open a browser and enter the IP address of the printer. Select Settings >Update Firmware.

    USB utility

Explanation

The new 13-digit serial numbers on these newly released printers are incompatible with 12-digit IPDS field lengths.
