Wrinkles or creases are appearing on pages printed

What You Will See

Printed pages are creased or wrinkled.

Explanation

Creases and folds in the paper are normally due to one of the following conditions:

  • The paper is not correctly loaded in the paper tray.
  • You are printing on a special type of paper or other media.
  • The paper has absorbed too much moisture from the surrounding air.
  • The paper has not had a chance to acclimate to the printing environment.
  • There is a problem with one of the feed rollers in the printer. NOTE: This will require a service action to correct.

Ensure that the print media is loaded correctly into each of the paper trays.

The paper size guides on the tray should lightly touch the edges of the paper stack - just enough to keep the paper stack straight and in place. Make sure the guides are not putting pressure on the paper stack as this can cause the paper to curl as it feeds out of the tray.

If you are p rinting on both the front and back sides of the page (duplexing), try printing on only one side of the paper. If single-sided pages are not damaged during printing, the source of the problem is the duplex area. Please check the duplex area for any obstructions. For detailed directions on how to do this, see the User's Guide.

NOTE: To confirm that the printer is printing on only one side, watch the paper as it exits the printer and make sure it does not come half-way out and then feed back into the printer. If the printer works correctly when printing on only one side of the page, you can continue to use the printer this way until you can arrange service on it.

Replace the paper in the printer with new paper from an unopened ream. If this corrects the issue, the original paper may h ave absorbed too much moisture from the surrounding air. Excessive moisture in the paper can cause it to wrinkle or crease as it feeds through the printer. To avoid this, keep the paper sealed in its original packaging and remove it only when you are ready to use it. In addition, make sure not to store paper in an environment that exposes it to higher than normal levels of humidity.

NOTE: In rare circumstances, the paper has not had a chance to acclimate to the surrounding environment. If the creasing issue began immediately after a new stack of paper was loaded into the tray, you should remove the paper tray and allow the paper 10 to 15 minutes to adjust to the printing environment. Then reinstall the paper tray and try printing again.

Check the type of print media you are pr inting on to eliminate print media from being a possible cause of the issue.

  • If you are printing on anything other than plain copy paper, please test the printer by printing on plain copy paper.
  • If you are printing on plain copy paper or trying out plain paper, ensure that the weight of the paper is 20 - 24 lb (75–90 g/m2). Paper that weighs less than 20 lb (75 g/m2) is more likely to experience paper feed issues under certain environmental conditions.

If the issue continues when you use plain copy paper, try changing the Paper Texture setting for Plain Paper to Smooth and the Paper Weight setting to Light. This may help correct the issue.

Use the local printer setup utility program on t he computer to change the Paper Texture setting for Plain Paper to Smooth. Next, change the Paper Weight setting to Light. Changing these settings will lower the operating temperature of the fuser and possibly reduce the creasing. NOTE: There is a small chance that toner may have difficulty adhering to the paper at the lower fuser temperature. If toner/print begins to rub off the page after printing, return the Paper Texture and Paper Weight settings to Normal.
