How to Set Up an LPM Print Queue on a Macintosh, Linux, or Unix System

Overview

This article details the steps required to set up a Lexmark Print Management (LPM) queue on a Macintosh OS X, Linux, or Unix environment.

Before you begin

This setup requires a Windows server where the LDD Client service and Line Printer Daemon (LPD) are enabled.

Windows LPD service is off by default. To enable, go to Start > type Services, and then locate and enable the required services. If the LPD service is not available, follow the steps found on this Windows document.

Procedure


NOTE:
You will need an admin account to add a queue.

1 Open a browser, and then go to the CUPS admin page.
2 Click Add Printer.
3 Select LPD/LPR Host or Printer found under Other Network Printers, and then click Continue.
4 Type lpd://<hostname>/<sharedqueuename> in the Connection box, where hostname is the computer name sharing the print queue (e.g., print server).
5 Enter values for Name, Description, and Location, and then click Continue.
6 Select Generic for the Make, and then proceed with the rest of the prompts.

Alternatively, you may perform the following steps for a Macintosh OS X system:

1 Click the Apple symbol > System Preferences, and then select Print and Fax or Print & Scan or Printers and Scanners.
2 Click the + button to add a new printer.

Click the IP tab, and then fill out the following fields:

  • Address: <Type the Windows Print Server IP address.>
  • Protocol: Line Printer Daemon – LPD
  • Queue: <Use the Windows Print Server Print Queue share name.>
  • Name: <Any>
  • Location: <Leave blank.>
  • Use: <Either select a Lexmark model if its listed in select printer software drop down box, or, you may use a Generic Postscript option if you cannot download the driver.>
4 Click Add to create the queue.
